Delivery times to APO/FPO addresses are typically 6 to 10 business days, depending on your actual physical location, but may take longer. No international sales.

We use PayPal to do our credit card processing securely, but you needn't be a PayPal member to order a kit. You can order kits using any major credit card. Kit prices include shipping. Sales tax at 6.75% is added automatically for products shipped to North Carolina addresses. Shipping regulations and the nature of the kits make it impossible for us to accept returns, so please be certain you want the kit before you order it. All sales are final. To avoid shipping delays, please be sure that the shipping address you provide is the same as the billing address for your credit card.

* BK01 kits formerly included a 10-pack of pre-sterilized polystyrene (plastic) Petri dishes. Current BK01 kits substitute a 3-pack of 75x82x15mm glass Petri dishes for the plastic Petri dishes. Plastic Petri dishes must be discarded after one use because they cannot be re-sterilized. Glass Petri dishes can be re-used indefinitely simply by washing them and sterilizing them in a pressure cooker (15 minutes at 15 PSI) or a standard kitchen oven (30 minutes at 450F).

1 included only in kits shipped to Hawaii (to substitute for the Rhizobia culture)
2 the book lists the BK01 kit as including amoxicillin capsules. Current BK01 kits substitute a vial of penicillin G potassium for the amoxicillin. You can substitute one heaping loose spatula spoon of penicillin G potassium powder for one 250 mg amoxicillin capsule.
3 with the exceptions of these items, the consumables in the kits should remain usable for at least two years if unopened or if carefully resealed after opening, and if stored in a cool, dark place. The Rhizobia culture, the carrot and lima bean seeds, and the yeast should remain usable for at least one year unopened. If you intend to reuse the kit for another student within two to three years, you can purchase replacements for the Rhizobia culture and the seeds at most lawn and garden stores (make sure the Rhizobia culture you purchase is compatible with lima beans), and yeast at any supermarket. Although we cannot guarantee shelf live for the BC03 Bacteria Culture because shipping and local storage conditions are beyond our control, if unopened and stored at room temperature in the dark, the BC03 culture should remain usable for at least one year and possibly several years. Do not refrigerate this culture. If you open the culture using aseptic procedures, you can recap and reseal it without significantly affecting the shelf life of the remainder.
4 not included in kits shipped to Hawaii (State regulations prohibit us from shipping Rhizobia cultures to Hawaii)
5 the book lists the BK01 kit as containing 15 mL of Gram's iodine stain. Current BK01 kits substitute a 30 mL bottle of iodine-iodide solution, a more concentrated form of Gram's iodine. For Gram staining, simply dilute one part of the iodine-iodide solution with two parts distilled water, e.g., 1 drop of iodine-iodide solution mixed with two drops of water.

Please note that many of the materials included in the BK01 kits are hazardous if handled or used improperly. Before opening or using the kit, please take the time to read the Material Safety Data Sheets, and observe all recommended precautions and safety measures while using the kit.

 Supplemental DVD

The Supplemental DVD is included with all BK01 kits. It includes the answers for the Review Questions at the end of each lab session in Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments. It also includes high-resolution (usually 6 or 12 megapixel) copies of the images in the book, for those who don't have a full set of prepared slides available. These image files can be viewed on any PC or Mac. (Click on the image to the left to view it in high resolution.)

If you don't buy the BK01 kit, you can still purchase the answer guide and image files separately on DVD. This DVD is included in the BK01 kit, so if you buy the kit you don't need to order the DVD separately.

BC03 Bacteria Culture (optional)

Microbiology experiments require culturing (growing colonies of) bacteria. Although you can culture bacteria from your local environment, doing so can be hazardous because many of these bacteria are pathogenic (disease-causing). Our immune systems can normally deal with the relatively small numbers of these pathogenic bacteria that are present in our environment, but culturing them hugely increases their numbers and creates a biohazard.

The BC03 Bacteria Culture provides a safer alternative. It provides three species of bacteria generally considered safe for middle-school and high school students to work with:

o Bacillus subtilis
(bacillus, Gram+)
o Micrococcus luteus (coccus, Gram+)
o Rhodospirillum rubrum (spirillum, Gram-)

All bacteria forms--rod, sphere, and spiral--are represented, and both Gram-positive and Gram-negative species are included.

We supply this culture as a dilute mixed suspension of the three bacteria species in phosphate buffered saline (PBS). Because there are no nutrients present in the PBS, the bacteria cannot grow and reproduce. They are in stasis, essentially a state of suspended animation, where they remain until conditions are favorable for growth.

You can activate this culture by using a sterile pipette or inoculating loop to transfer a small amount of the liquid from the tube to a container of sterile nutrient broth. Incubate the container for several days at room temperature until it becomes cloudy, indicating a large population of the mixed bacteria.

Alternatively, you can streak a nutrient agar plate lightly with a small amount of liquid from this tube and incubate the plate to grow separate colonies of the different bacteria.

SK01 Prepared Slides Set (optional)

We also offer our SK01 Core Prepared Slides Set as an option. This set includes the following 15 prepared microscope slides:

□ Amoeba (wm)
□ Anthers, lily (cs)
□ Bone, compact (cs)
□ Egg, horse ascaris (sec)
□ Euglena (wm)
□ Frog Liver (sec)
□ Hydra, budding (wm)
□ Leaf, lilac (cs)
□ Lichen (sec)
□ Mitosis, Onion Root Tip (ls)
□ Muscle, involuntary smooth (cs/ls)
□ Muscle, skeletal (cs/ls)
□ Neurons, multi-polar motor (wm)
□ Paramecium (wm)
□ Stems, Monocot and Dicot (cs)

These prepared slides are of decent quality, supplied by the same vendor who supplied the slides we used to shoot the images for Illustrated Guide to Home Biology Experiments. They ship in a 15-position wooden side box with a secure latch.
